Recently, I was a speaker at the Middlesex County Dental Society of New Jersey Study Club. I discussed Content & Social Media Marketing and had a great time doing it. If you were there, thank you for coming!

I received a question on my survey from Katie. Katie asked “Should we use multiple Social Media platforms?”

No, you do not have to use multiple Social Media platforms. The practice can determine which Social Media platforms to use. This is decided based on the services you provide, the patient population you serve, the ease of the Social Media platform and the time you have to dedicate towards Social Media. I know that’s a lot there. To make it simpler, here are some tips;

1) Figure out what Social Media platforms are relevant to your practice. To do this, look at the age group you serve. Then match that age group to the Social Media platform. For example, Facebook has the largest population between 24-55 while Twitter is 18-49. (I went over that slide in my presentation – let me know if you want me to email you the slide).

2) Choose 1-3 Social Media platforms that serve your patient population and also deliver your message. Since you already narrowed down to where your patients are, now you have to choose between those platforms. To do this, zone in on the type of message/content you will be sharing. If your content is Social, create a Facebook page, if your content is based around customer service and B2B, than create a Twitter account, if you want to share photos, then Instagram etc. It is completely fine to just choose one platform and work on that until you are ready to try another platform.

3) By now you have narrowed down the Social Media platforms to age group and content. It’s time to learn how to make these Social Media platforms work! if you don’t already know how the Social Media platforms you selected work – you can find videos on them on the Social Media platforms and through Google Search. Remember, it’s better to be good at 1 Social Media platform than to be mediocre at all of them.

4) Plan out what you will share on the platforms. Most platforms allow you to “schedule” posts. This is a great tool for you to schedule the posts and always keep the content flowing.

5) Keep at it! You will get better at any platform you use if you keep at it. Make sure to share the content that is relevant to that platform and track your analytics. It takes 6-9 months for Social Media to work.
